Teen singer Greyson Chance compares himself to young Bowie

ROYAL OAK — Teenage pop-rock singer Greyson Chance has placed some pretty heavy expectations on himself for his tour which comes to the Royal Oak Music Theatre on Sunday. He’s confident in his music and likens himself to a young Thin White Duke.

“If I could compare it to anything, I would think of what David Bowie would do when he was 13,” Chance told The Flint Journal. “That’s somewhat what I’m doing. It’s a very theatrical show. It’s very dramatic and it’s a rock ‘n’ roll show.”

Chance became a household name after the then-sixth-grader posted a YouTube clip of himself performing Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” at a choir event in his hometown of Edmond, Okla., last April. The video was eventually viewed by more than 30 million people and led to a performance two weeks later on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” A week after that, he reappeared on the talk show and, during that visit, DeGeneres announced she had signed the youngster to her newly formed record label eleveneleven.

“Working with Ellen is great,” Chance said. “She’s so supportive of everything I do, and she’s such an inspiration, and she’s become a very good friend, too. So I love working with her.”

But meeting Lady Gaga is up there on his list of favorite happenings since his video went viral.

“I met Gaga a couple times and that was probably my most starstruck thing ever,” he said. “I love Gaga. She’s a huge inspiration.”

Even with his newfound fame, Chance said, his friends back home have been very supportive of his career.

“I’m not really around Edmund a lot,” he said. “I kind of live in L.A. now, making the record. But my new home is the tour bus. I’m not really a normal schoolboy anymore. My friends are very, very supportive and I go back every now and again.”

As Chance mentioned, he recently wrapped up work on his debut album with a team of producers including songwriter/producer and Geffen Records chairman Ron Fair. The first single, “Waiting Outside the Lines” was recently the No. 1 physical single in the country for four straight weeks. The album has no name yet and no release date, although it will be sent to stores this year.

“The album’s been coming along so great,” he said. “It’s a pop-rock sound, but I think people are going to be very surprised with it. It’s a very deep record, and I think people are really going to see that.

“I wrote the record from, really, my experiences and my passion. The record is mainly about heartbreak, so that’s where I got inspiration for it. It was very fun. If I can say so myself, it’s a pretty good record. It’s going to go very far.”

In support of the collection, Chance is touring with Australian Cody Simpson, who also posted YouTube videos of himself performing covers of songs by artists who inspired him. His favorites include Justin Timberlake, Jason Mraz and Michael Jackson.

“I’m so excited for the tour with Cody,” Chance said. “I think it’s going to be great, because it’s really going to be showing two different sides of pop music. I think it’s going to be a great thing for our fans to see.

“People judge pop music to be one type of music. I think on this tour, they’ll be able to see different sides and the differences between me and Cody. Cody’s more of a dance-pop and I’m more of a pop-rock thing. I think it’s going to be really good. Hopefully I can go pretty far. I’m looking to please my fans and just make good music and put on a great show.”
